From: Bernie Finkel Great website!! I am ressurecting my love of folk music again and you have a bunch of songs that I was dying to get the lyrics and chords for. Your transposing program is greatly appreciated. I did notice one mistake on the chords of the "night they drove old dixie down" Am C F Dm(should be Am)...sounds right that way. If you are looking for another song to add on to your Inventory...I'd like to see you add Scarlet Ribbons. thanks

From: Marga Grundel I am a beginner. I am learning the X-mas song :Oh holy night. I am playing it with the notes. No sharps or flats. it starts with eee, open ggg aa and so on. What key is this, and I would love to play a few chords with the notes, as it sounds very simple and boring. I would love, if you can answer me before X-mas. All the best, marga x

Do you think you might be able to find "The Lovin' Of The Game" by Steve Goodman? It's a beautiful folk song. I would be very grateful to you if you could post it!

Thank you so much for the songs, several of them I have never been able to play but your versions are friendly. I have been playing for 35 years and like your mom, I have collected many and made them easier and my own, so let me know if you are looking for something that I might have. I hope that someday my children will join me in playing also. thanks, joni

Enjoyed your site, didn't have the specific song I was searching for but your sense of humor in "Aaron Who?" was worth the visit! Here's hoping the copyright lawyers don't shut you down... it's getting real difficult to find tab sites these days that they haven't threated with legal action.

Love this site, I have found some songs I have been looking for to teach my grandchildren. Here's another verse for Away with rum: We never drink orange juice, cuse orange juice ferments, one little sip makes a man lose his sence. Can you imagine a sorrier tale, than a man getting snookered when his orange juice turns stale.

Hi Aaron, thank you for this great compilation of songs. I especially like the possibility to transpose the chords with a single mouseclick! I found a small error in "I'm In Love With a Big Blue Frog": In the line "His mother was a frog from Philadelphia" the chords should be A A7 D D7 rather than A A7 E E7. I'll bookmark your page now and will return very often.

I found your webb site looking for some lyrics to some Peter Paul & Mary songs I had heard from my older brothers albums when I was around 12. I came across this site some years back & rated it highly. Now I've tracked it down again & still rate it highly. Just one little correction - the lyrics to 'Universal Soldier' have one error which throws the whole song off message: it's 'he's fighting _for_ the USA...' & not 'he's fighting the USA'. Forgot I knew so many of those numbers - great fun had by all and a new generation get exposed to this great music. "The times they are a-changing", but some things remain thankfully the same!

I have been looking for many songs since I teamed up with a new friend and began to sing old songs. My song books were unfortunately thrown away. Replacing songs I have been collecting since 1963 has been horrific. Your site is great because not only do you have chords, you have reasonable chords and don't have every other song in the key of E or F or some other ridiculous key that no one ever plays in. Thanks for all your work and thanks to your mom!!

Great sing-along songs. I have been working on a similar idea with guitar chords although not as a website. I have 194 great singalong songs from 50's 60'70's with some overlap with yours. I have printouts that I give out when I lead singing in groups. I will add a bunch of yours. I have more beatles, motown, early rock. You might mention to people that they can brush up on the melodies on youtube. Every song on your list that I looked up was there. I would be happy to share my songs with you. You can email me through www.bernieheideman.com I couldn't find an email for you on your site. I couldn't leave my list because your comment box said it was too long. So email me and I'll send you the list.

The least thing I can do is to THANK YOU!

Unknown said...

Thank you very much for your music lyrics! I have two corrections to make, though. (hehe, You're obviously not from Massachusetts.) In "Sweet Baby James", they are "Berkshires", not "Birkshires seem dreamlike..."

In MTA (Charlie and the MTA), it's Chelsea, not Chelsie.

One suggestion: On the homepage for the songs, it would be helpful for you to post the name of the font and its size. It took quite some experimentation for me to find the correct one that would keep the chords in the right place after cut & paste. (I'm using OpenOffice, not WORD, but it's supposed to be the same.) The font you used is called SimSun, and size 10. Second suggestion, or whining.... I hate this font once it's transferred over to my docs. It takes up more room than a more typical TimesNewRoman, and it's really THIN to read - for us old geezers. When you have NOTHING else to do with your time, may I suggest changing the songs to TimesNewRoman - everybody's default, you know...

If that's too hard, perhaps just for future additions, but you'd have to post the font name so folks would know.

THANKS !
P.S. How about some of the early Beach Boys tunes?

Assuming that you are still adding songs to your site, I would request "All I Know" by Jimmy Webb from Art Garfunkle's Angel Claire CD or "Another Lullaby" also by Jimmy Webb and from the same CD. I am an old but new learning guitarist and can't find these on any site. Just found yours and printed off a bunch of old favorites. Thanks, CSB

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!

Some of the happiest times of my life were in high school & college (roughly 1968-76) and my $25 sunspotted guitar (which was why it was sold to me so cheap) went with me everywhere. I gave it up a long time ago, but just got a brand new nylon string folk guitar, and it's coming back as naturally as riding a bicycle. These songs are breathing life back into me!!! (Also, thank your mom for me for starting this!!!) Prayers, hugs & kisses from an old flower child!!!

Aaron- Great canoe/squirrel/Sarah story. I stumbled upon the song list last night. Well done! When my girls were little, I would tuck them in and play/sing old songs to them. Now my youngest is wed to another guitarist, and he is continuing the tradition with their two little guys. I'm going to add to his goodnight repertoire with some songs from the list that I had forgotten about. An aside: at Summer Camp when I was 9, the Kingston Trio was big. I learned MTA and many others and have never forgotten them. Do you know that there is a spoken intro to MTA? I've had it stuffed in my head since that Summer and would be happy to send it to you if interested. Thank you for your site. Just great! John B.

I just re-found this site. It's a great resource.
In Fire and rain, a Cmaj7 at the end of the line sounds good.
The other issue is crediting writers,
"The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is a song written by Canadian musician Robbie Robertson, first recorded by The Band in 1969 and released on their self-titled second album. Joan Baez's cover of the song was a top-five chart hit in late 1971." Wikipedia.
It's important to recognize their work, otherwise we'd have to hum with no melody!

You have the song "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" listed as "Traditional" when in fact it was written by Levon Helm and Robbie Robertson and released on The Band's second album in 1969.

It wasn't fun explaining why all these young asian girls are "on line" to my 12 year old daughter, who was otherwise very interested in the songs on your sight. I realize you need advertising to pay the overhead on this site, but can you at least find some advertisers that are more rated "G".
Thanks...

Eesh. Sorry about the bad ads. To the best of my knowledge, I have all questionable content blocked from my ad network. If you can provide more information about what the offending ad was advertising, I can dig deeper into finding out how it appeared on my site.

Nice web site and thank you. I was looking for lyrics to songs my family knows well so we could sing with my mother, who suffers with Alzheimers, when we go to visit. Music has always been such a huge part of her life and she always loves it when someone comes to sing or play an instrument. So thank you so much for this.

I have the Chord Buddy attachment to my guitar. It has only 4 available chords. G, C, D and E. How can I get songs on your list transposed so I can play them?

Hi from Søren in Denmark.
I found your song book, and are amazed about the possibilities I suddenly got.
I'm learning to play guitar, and this book is a great help to me.
Thank you, and compliments on this very good job.

Kind regards
Søren

Thank you so much for this wonderful resource. It is like you read my mind and heart to pick all my favorite sing-along songs. I have never heard the song The Klan before - it made me cry. Keep up the good work and play!

WOW!!!
I just stumbled upon this site. Fabulous! And Transposition Too?!!
I don't see comments newer than 2011, which seems surprising. Is the site still actively maintained?
Anyhow... This is Great! Thank you.

Great Songs .... Cords were are all wrong !

Thanks for the site. The lyrics for James Taylor "Fire and Rain" go "Been walking my mind to an easy time my back turned towards the sun", so please make that change.

In the song, "Suzanne," the line should read, Our Lady of the Harbor - it's a title for Mary in Catholicism.

Hi - nice site, especially the transposing feature.
"Reason to Believe" has a chord error, I think.
Just before the chorus, the last line of the verse is:
Still I'd look (C) to find a reason (G) to believe (D) (D7)

I believe this should be :
Still I look (Em) to find a reason (C) to believe (D)
Thanks!

Hi again -
for this song - "Away With Rum (Bikel Theo)" - the writer is Theodore (or Theo) Bikel, not the other way around...
Thanks,

I'm a ukulele player from Newtown Square Pennsylvania, USA, my community is outside Philadelphia. I love your selections and the chords and lyrics are excellent. I've never seen the % signs on music before, what do they represent? Bob Gross

This is great! I have been asked to come and play for a group to sing around a camp fire and as all I know is country and rock songs. Can I print off your web page in larger print so I can pass out copies for people to sing?
Thanks

Thank you for having these here. I am away from home so playing a borrowed guitar and without chords and lyrics it's no fun. You have enabled fun. When I get home I will try to find some time to share with you.
Thanks again,

"The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is not traditional. It was written by Robbie Robertson and first released on "The Band" album by The Band in 1969, then a top 10 hit by Joan Baez in 1971

I'm so glad I found this! I can't play bar chords because I have crooked fingers, and the ability to transpose stuff so I can play the song is making learning guitar much easier. Thank you for all the effort you've put in! Could you do "Gentle On My Mind" by John Hartford.

(Oh dear. My post seems to have got swallowed, so I'm doing it again.)

Lovely song collection - many from my 'era'. Having got myself roped into teaching varisized people to play guitar, I had a great time finding songs (especially some with only 2 chords). (In case it interests you, Harry Nilsson's 'Put the lime in the coconut' and Aretha Franklin's 'Chain of Fools' are 1-chorders.) Thanks!!

Love this list. But what do the % mean? They show up eveywhere seemingly at random. I'm reading on a Kindle Fire.

Just wanting to say thanks. Lots of songs here that are of my era and my tribe. Oh, and somehow "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" got "Wonderful World" mixed into it. I don't think they're related

I ran across this last night while searching for 60's folk songs with lyrics and guitar chords. I am so grateful that you put this together and made it available to everyone. I just love it!

Thx
